Millions at risk as hackers breach Steam gaming network

The credit card information of 35 million gamers is at risk after hackers gained access to a database at Steam, a distribution network for major PC titles including Call of Duty and Skyrim.

Modern Warfare 3

Valve, the firm behind the network, said it stored credit card information in encrypted form and that it so far had no evidence of misuse as a result of the intrusion, which took place on Sunday.
It was alerted to the attack when the Steam user forums were defaced.
“We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums,” said chief executive Gabe Newell in a letter to users.
“This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.”
“We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.”
