Big names Google, Facebook and Amazon may join SOPA protest

The Stop Online Piracy Act is picking up pace and the US government’s job isn’t getting easier considering the resistance it’s facing from companies. It appears that the large companies, Google, Facebook and Amazon will join the protest. According to CNet, the initial protest meant taking sites offline, but the new plan seems to go black at a certain time. There are talks with eBay and Yahoo as well. Markham Erickson from the NetCoalition trade association said there were serious discussions on this topic and nothing like this has been attempted before.

Tumblr had attempted something like this and it resulted in close to 90,000 calls being made to the Congress regarding SOPA. Large services such as Google, Facebook and Amazon going down would bring in larger number of users being irritated. It’s not all straight forward for these companies either. One has to consider the fact that there might be users visiting the site and might assume that the site is not functional. These companies are also likely to take hits in terms of revenue if they choose to go black for a long period of time.
