CES 2012: New $100 tablet to be announced

OLPC (One Laptop Per Child), a U.S-based non profit organization will showcase its XO tablet at CES, next week. With a plethora of tablets to be announced, what makes this one different? Well, first it’s for a humanitarian cause – something on the lines of the Aakash tablet, and will be shipped to kids in developing countries. Also, it will be sold in bulk to the various governments and we have our doubts if it will be made available for individual purchase.

The XO tablet was supposed to launch around 2010, but due to a few unprecedented delays it will be announced at CES 2012, which again follows a similar pattern to the delays that the Aakash tablet had (or has) been facing. As reported by Android OS, the tablet will sport a Marvell Armada PXA618 SoC and have 512 MB of RAM. The front will sport an 8-inch PixelQi display with a resolution of 1024 x 768. The device will run on Google’s Android operating system or their own Suger OS, which seems to be a stripped down customized Linux version.

However, we'll have to wait for the CES to start to get real world images of the tablet. As far as pricing is concerned, the tablet is expected to cost around $100. Also, it will start shipping to various countries in March 2012. Stay tuned to this space for more details on the XO tablet.
