iPad downloads mount to 3 billion, slay Android tablet downloads

Apple iPad users have downloaded a whopping three billion applications, since the iPad first arrived nearly two years back, in 2010. According to a research conducted by trend forecasting and analysis firm, ABIresearch, this amounts to 19 percent of all the downloads that have been completed by Apple users. In comparison to this, Android tablets have completed a modest 440 million downloads. One of the reasons cited for the difference in numbers is that applications for the iPad are generally more feature rich and of ‘a better quality’ than most Android tablet – specific apps.

However, with the launch of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that aims to bridge the gap between Android tablets and phones, there are chances that we could see a different growth rate in 2012. Also, they’ve predicted that Google will surpass Apple in app downloads for smartphones with the number being close to 58 million in 2016, as compared to 27 billion for the iPhone. Which company do you think will have the upper edge this year, Apple or Google?
